FAQs

What is Pet Insurance for Hudson's Bay customers?

Pet Insurance for Hudson's Bay customers is health insurance for cats and dogs that covers up to 80% of the cost of care and veterinary services including x-rays, hospitalization, dental care, and prescriptions required for any illness or accident. We offer 3 plans with varying coverage levels, so you can choose the plan that is best for your pet.

How does pet insurance work

Pet Insurance for Hudson's Bay customers reimburses you for a large portion of your veterinary bills when you make a claim. You will pay your veterinarian upfront, submit your claim, and then receive your reimbursement by electronic funds transfer to your bank account, or via a claim cheque in the mail.

Can I use any veterinarian?

Yes. You can keep your own vet or any other licensed veterinarian in Canada. While vacationing in North America, you can visit a licensed veterinarian in any province, territory, or in the continental United States.

Is there a waiting period for coverage?

Yes, and it is activated from your policy start date. For accident coverage, it is 48 hours, and for illness coverage it is 14 days. Dental coverage begins six months from policy purchase.

What is not covered?

Pet Insurance for Hudson's Bay customers does not cover:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Any treatment that is not directly related to an accident or illness (eg. nail trims)
  • Flea control or treatments of a diagnosed flea allergy dermatitis
  • Any food including prescription or therapeutic
  • House calls by your veterinarian
  • Expenses incurred outside of Canada and other than while vacationing in the continental United States
  • For a complete list of all exclusions and limitations, see our Policy Wordings

How do I make a claim?

Visit our How to Claim page.

What is co-insurance?

Before any applicable deductible is applied, you are responsible for paying a percentage of your claim. Pet Insurance for Hudson's Bay customers pays up to 80% of your claim which means you are responsible for as little as 20%.

What is a deductible?

The deductible is the fixed amount that is deducted from your claim. You only pay a deductible if you make a claim; once the deductible is satisfied you don't have to pay a deductible again for any additional claims made in the same policy year.
The amount of the deductible depends on the age of your pet. The older the pet, the more likely it is they'll need veterinary services. By paying a higher deductible - and only when you need to make a claim - you're helping to keep your pet insurance premiums down.

Do I have to vaccinate my pet?

This is best decided by your veterinarian. You need to keep up-to-date with any vaccinations recommended by your veterinarian; he or she will advise you which shots are required and how often.

Are regular veterinary check-ups required to maintain my pet's insurance?

Our Policy Wordings advise that your pet should have at least one veterinary check-up per year.
